Summary

Part One: Chapter One starts in the present-day suburbs following the first-person narration of 17-year-old Ivy. She panics as her drunk boyfriend, Nate, drives too fast after Ivy lost the courage to break up with him. Suddenly, he shouts and swerves off the road. They find a naked girl slapping herself and making guttural noises in a creek. As Ivy realizes the girl was laughing, the girl rises, telling them to show themselves. She repeats Ivy’s name as Nate pulls her away.
