Summary

Scene Eight is titled “Duckling Makes Vows.” Harry is ill, and Duckling makes several promises about what she will do if he lives. He dies. She cries out that she hates him, and then says she loves him. She curls up beside him, asking how he could do this to her.

Scene Nine is titled “A Love Scene.” Mary is rehearsing her lines for the scene she has with her character’s lover in the play. At this point, the character is in disguise as a boy. Her lines include the request that her beloved “tell [her] plainly what usage [she] must expect when [she is] under [his] command” (94). She tries a few different approaches and intensities, becoming aware that Clark has arrived, and is watching her. He joins in with her dialogue, kissing her in character. She corrects her kissing...
