Alexander Senderovsky
Alexander Senderovsky is one of the main characters of the novel. He is referred to as Senderovsky throughout the text. His friends call him Sasha. He is married to Masha Levin-Senderovsky, and the father of their adopted daughter Natasha, or Nat, Levin-Sendovsky.
In the narrative present, Senderovsky is a retired teacher and a writer. He lives in the city, presumably New York, and owns land in the country. At the start of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Senderovsky invites his closest friends to come and stay with him and his family at "his favorite place on earth, the House on the Hill" (5). Senderovsky has developed the land to resemble "a tidy European village, the kind that would have never welcomed his ancestors" (15). The House on the Hill is the main house. Around the property, there are several bungalows, in which he settles his friends.
