Summary

In Chapter 7, Chinonso continues to feel somewhat nervous and ashamed regarding the cruel treatment he received from Ndali’s father (Luke) and brother (Chuka). Nonetheless, he remains determined to attend Luke’s birthday party. It soon becomes apparent that many wealthy, powerful, and famous people are among the party guests. Chinonso has difficulty locating Ndali, so he sits quietly by himself. Ndali’s brother, Chuka, approaches Chinonso and cruelly disparages him. Chinonso begins to feel that he should not have come to the party. Ndali finally sees him, and they stay together during the party. Chinonso feels that the other guests are gossiping about how Ndali should not marry him. At one point in the night, Chuka humiliates Chinonso by forcing him to leave the party, put on a guard uniform, and patrol the perimeter. After Ndali realizes what has happened, she leaves the...
