The Emerald Lodge
The Emerald Lodge is the principal setting of "The Prospectors," which takes place in the 1930s. The lodge is in a ski resort in Lucerne, Oregon. Clara and Aubergine ride a chairlift at the beginning of the story with plans to attend the opening of the Evergreen Lodge, but find themselves in this ghost world instead. The Emerald Lodge was being built just a few years before, but collapsed during an avalanche. All of the construction workers and craftsmen were trapped inside and died there. This is where Clara and Aubergine find themselves when they exit the chairlift. The Emerald Lodge's opulence is described vividly: "Amethyst chandeliers sent lakes of light rippling across the dance floor; the stone chimneys looked like indoor caves. Over the bar, a mounted boar grinned tuskily down at us" (13).
