Aubergine
Aubergine is the narrator and main character of "The Prospectors." In the story, which takes place in the 1930s, Aubergine and her friend Clara have recently arrived in Lucerne, Oregon for the grand opening of a ski lodge, but when they ride the ski lift to attend the opening party, they discover they have entered a world of ghosts - the men who died while building another lodge that collapsed under an avalanche. Over the course of the story, it is revealed that Aubergine is from Florida, and that her father was a degenerate gambler who killed himself. With the necessity to make her own way in the world, Aubergine got a job at a resort, where she met Clara, the daughter of the owner. The two became friends, and when Aubergine discovered that someone was physically abusing Clara, she formulated a plan for the two to run...
