Summary
“The Gondoliers” tells the story of Janelle Picarro, a.k.a Blister, who is a gondolier in New Florida, an area of the state that has been completely submerged in water after an apocalyptic weather event. Janelle and her sisters steer their boats by echolocation, a strange phenomenon whereby they can hear each other and intuit changes in the water by picking up minute sounds from miles away. Janelle accepts a passenger late at night, a mysterious old man who asks her to take him to the seawall in Bahía Rosa. The seawall is a dam that scientists built in an attempt to stop the flooding during the apocalyptic event. Janelle knows this is not a safe area, but agrees to take him anyway. The man is visibly very ill.
