Racial Bias

Some people demonstrate racial bias against those whose ethnicity is different from their own. The two main characters of this novel are Black, and they face racial bias in different forms throughout their lives. Additionally, racial bias can instill fear in those who exhibit the bias and those who experience it.

The way whites see Blacks is one example of racial bias. Both the photographer and the dancer attended private schools in which Blacks were in the minority. Each faced prejudice based on the expectations of their white counterparts. The photographer describes his first meeting with some of the white students who immediately compare him to the only other Black boy in his grade. Other than the color of their skin, there is no comparison between the two boys. The white students' inability to see the differences is one example of racial bias.
