Summary
In Part 4, the year was 2004 and Oona was 40 years old. Oona found herself on the F train headed toward Park Slope. When she arrived home, an unfamiliar man with a British accent was waiting for her. He introduced himself as Edward Clary, her husband. He pulled Oona's wedding band from his pocket to reassure her he was telling the truth.
Sensing that Oona was hesitant to believe him, Edward gave her a letter from herself. Oona recognized her curly handwriting on the envelope and furtively read its contents. Earlier Oona reassured her that Edward was trustworthy, in love with her, and worth the difficulty of making a marriage work. The letter warned that her relationship with Madeleine would begin on rocky ground but encouraged her to heal their bond.
