Ratty’s memory weaver powers show how important memories are to a person’s growth, and how painful losing them can be.
First, it is important to understand how Ratty takes the memories because it shows just how important each one is. When Tanya finds her button in a jar full of mismatched things, he tells her, “[the memory] needs an object belonging to the person to make it work - something little for a small, unimportant memory… or something bigger, more personal, for memories that are deep and make a person who they are”(100). While these objects by themselves are unimportant, they all belong to the person the memory is taken from. While they may not notice the absence of the item, it is still somehow important to them.
