Bourne
Bourne is the overall setting of the novel. It is apparently located in the northeastern United States, but the author notes that it is not a real town. The town has always been small, but it has become more so since Belsum Chemical tainted the water, causing many of the town's people to die or become terribly sick. The town has only a few businesses, including a pizza place, donut shop, nursery, and hardware store. There is only one church operating, and there is a single doctor and one therapist, both operating out of an old house. Through their research, Mab, Monday, and Mirabel discover the river once ran directly through the town, but was redirected to supply the chemical plant. Very little changes here. However, after the plant is gone for good, a new hopefulness seems to begin.
