Summary

The next chapter is titled “Three.” Mirabel has trouble in winter. Her body does not react well to the cold, and her wheelchair does not navigate well in ice or snow. Even in Bourne, where every sidewalk is usually accessible, she might encounter a broken branch or section of ice. Mirabel goes to Tom's workshop where he keeps all sorts of parts and pieces to help the various residents (he was an engineer when the Belsum plant was open). Today, he provides her with a solar charger for her chair and mats she can carry in a special pocket that will allow her to cross small obstacles. Outside, she encounters River who is looking for a place to get a key copied. She says it is at the church which he feels is “weird.” He asks to walk with her, then is embarrassed...
