Summary

While out for dinner, Emma and Jesse realize they would rather be elsewhere. They pay and leave. While Jesse is picking up food, Emma checks her email in the car. She finds a note from the wedding venue, following up “about the cancellation fee” (253). Emma realizes Sam contacted them, and is “prepared to leave” her (254). She is “suddenly overwhelmed by the desire” to drive home to him (254). She realizes she could lose him and Jesse.

Jesse returns with a pizza, which Emma cannot eat because of her new lactose intolerance. Emma is worried because Jesse is speeding through the “snowy streets” and driving without a license (255). She tries believing him when he says everything will be fine. Then a cop pulls them over. The officer is incredulous when Jesse says he does not have his license. Emma jumps in, explaining Jesse’s situation...
