Summary
A year into their relationship, Emma and Sam moved in together. They started a life in Cambridge, and adopted two cats (128). Not long later, they went out to the symphony. While walking around eating beforehand, Sam told Emma he wanted to spend his life with her, but did not want to pressure her to marry. When she was ready to marry him, she should tell him. Emma dropped her food and kissed Sam. She was ready to marry him. Though she momentarily thought it was “too soon,” she reminded herself she deserved “to be happy” (132, Reid’s italics). That night, they drank wine, had sex, and talked. Emma marveled at how her life was evolving. Because she did not know Jesse was alive, she felt as if she “was moving forward” (134).
