Importance: This quote shows how connected Bea feels to Ray at the beginning of the novel and how unhealthy it is for her. Bea understands that she should not feel the way she does about Ray, but her feelings become more complicated after Ray sleeps with her for the first time, before breaking contact. Yet, Bea also realizes that she feels lost without Ray. She thinks that if she were to let him go now, she will be nothing. This is how unhealthy her feelings toward Ray are. It also shows that this is something she must learn to overcome if she wants to find someone else to love.
