Summary
Chapter Thirteen
In Chapter Thirteen, Merrin learns from Mrs. VanDyne that Elias’ father is vice president of the Biotech Hub. He oversees experimental operations. Elias’ mother hands him a letter from his twin sisters. Elias had cut Merrin off when his mother asked why Elias was so happy the night they’d gone to see the aurora together. When Merrin asks why he is strange and will tell her only that he wanted to keep their abilities to himself. When Merrin asks about the twins, Elias seems worried. He tells Merrin about the knock-knock jokes through which they’d communicated. The letter contains a joke that Elias doesn’t understand.
Elias continues to seem distracted. Before Merrin leaves, she asks what is wrong. He tells her that the police had come to his house because he’d left his backpack on...
