Summary
Chapter Nine
In Chapter Nine, Merrin runs all the way back to her house. When she arrives there panting and gasping, her brothers are afraid a boy has done something to hurt her. The promise to “kick his ass” but Merrin tells them that she is all right. She slides into the house past her parents and gets in the shower. Afterward, her father calls up the stairs, concerned. Exhaustion finally hits Merrin and she sits on the stairs. Her father sounds almost hopeful when he asks if it is a boy who is causing her emotional distress. She says yes, then no, then cries. At this moment, Elias pulls up in the driveway, bringing Merrin’s car home. He is polite and respectful. Realizing Merrin has not been harmed, her father sends her to bed, telling her that she can...
