Death.
Death is one of the most obvious themes in Ruby's story. Ruby is dealing with her mother's death as the book opens. Not only must she come to terms with the loss of her mother, but also with the ways her mother's death has affected Ruby's life.
Whip must also deal with the death of Ruby's mother. However, Whip's feelings are different from Ruby's. Whip is sad Ruby's mother had died, but is also excited because it means he will finally get to be a part of Ruby's life. Whips feelings are complicated for himself, Ruby and the reader to understand and come to terms with.
