Ruby Miliken.

Ruby is a fifteen-year-old high school student with a sharp mind and sarcastic sense of humor. Ruby's mother has passed away and she is going to live with her father. Ruby is angry at her mother for dying, at her father for abandoning her and at her aunt for sending her away. The story is conveyed through Ruby's poems and emails.

Lizzie Brody.

Lizzie Brody has been Ruby's best friend since she was a little girl. Lizzie emails Ruby and tries to comfort her when her mother dies and she has to move away. Lizzie keeps an eye on Ruby's boyfriend for her and eventually begins dating him behind Ruby's back.

Aunt Duffy.

Aunt Duffy is Ruby's mother's sister. Aunt Duffy secretly helped Whip be involved in his daughter's life. She also told Ruby who her father was and took her to see his movies every year...
