The Kansas House
The Kansas house is where the boys lived with their father and mother before their parents’ separation. After the separation, the father retained ownership of the house while the mother moved out. In this house, the two brothers each have their own bedroom, as well as their own bathroom, with the narrator’s being down two flights of stairs from his bedroom, next to the basement. This house features very briefly in the novel, and the only extended scene that takes place in it is in the first chapter when the father and brother are taking pictures of the narrator in his bathroom after he has been physically abused by the mother. Soon after, they move out of this house and head to New Mexico.
