August Landry
August Landry is the protagonist in One Last Stop. The third person limited narrative focuses on August’s life after she moves to New York City to finish her degree in sociology. When August first arrives in Brooklyn, she is emotionally reserved and avoids forming friendships to protect herself from the pain of rejection. She does not want to develop relationships with her new roommates, Niko, Myla, and Wes, despite their attempts to get to know her. McQuiston enacts August’s fear of rejection to exemplify the detrimental effects of negative core beliefs. While August craves connection, her long held belief that other people do not want her around leads her to isolate and push others away. August perpetuates her own loneliness by rebuffing the people who want to be a part of her life.
