Chapters 26-30 Summary
In chapter 26, Myron meets with Arthur Bradford on the campaign trail. Chance is not happy to see him but instructs him to wait on the bus, where Myron finds Sam reading a magazine. Myron asks Arthur about his wife's disappearance from the social scene. Bradford is confused as to why Myron keeps bringing up his wife when he is supposed to be looking for Anita Slaughter. Resigned, Bradford agrees to tell Myron the truth, which upsets Chance greatly. Arthur Bradford tells Myron that his wife had indeed had a breakdown, though she had not been institutionalized. What had seemed like moments of quiet contemplation when they had met in college had turned out to be mental illness that had gotten worse throughout the years.
