Romantic Relationships
Romantic relationships have both spoken and unspoken rules to follow. However, there are no rules dictating a successful romantic relationship for Laurie and her contemporaries in the narrative. Laurie’s relationship with Oscar shows that a marriage contract is not strong enough to keep a couple together. When Laurie says that she will not move to Belgium and she does not want Oscar to divide his time between the two places, he says, “We made vows. For better, for worse. We promised each other” (350).
