Chapter 12 Summary and Analysis
Toward the end of February, Torey is scheduled to go out of town for a conference. She had left the class with a substitute for one day back in November, but this time she will be gone for two days and Sheila was not part of the class back in November. Torey is worried about how Sheila will react to Torey being gone. Torey uses discussion time to remind the class that she will be away from school for two whole days. She reassures them that Anton and Whitney will still be there and that things will go on as usual. While the other children go out to recess with Anton, Sheila hangs back. Sheila wants to know why Torey did not specifically tell her that she was going away. She is upset and associates Torey's leaving with her mother abandoning...
