Summary
Vaughan, Armstrong, Daunt, and eight other men ventured to Brandy Island in search of Victor in “The Other Side of the River.” They split up to search the factory and distillery before a figure jumped into the river. It was Victor, whose body was failing him in the cold water. When he lost his stamina in the current, someone pulled him onto a punt. After extensively searching the river, the men believed Victor died. The parson determined through correspondence that Lily’s sister had wandered off with a fever and died later of illness. Rita explained to Lily that Victor lied to her. Lily declined the parson’s offer to live at the parsonage in fear that Victor, dead or alive, would find her.
