Summary
In “Counting,” after Daunt’s return to Oxford, he bought a boat and named it Collodion to photograph the river. He returned to Radcot to thank those who helped him. Upon arrival at Rita’s cottage, he offered her a free photograph. Rita explained she would test a medical hypothesis, and Daunt agreed to help in exchange for her to pose. After the photo was taken, Daunt took her into Collodion’s darkroom to develop it. He felt himself falling in love as her image appeared. They contemplated together the reason Rita was attacked. For Rita’s experiment, Daunt submerged his body in the cold river while she tracked his pulse, which she determined climbed, in cold water.
