The Fillmore
The Fillmore is the neighborhood in San Francisco, California where the novel is set. Vivian moved to the Fillmore 25 years prior to the narrative present. This is where she established her life after leaving her hometown in Louisiana. Although it took her some time to adjust to her new environs, in the narrative present, Vivian is an active member of the Fillmore community. Her daughters are also well-known and well-loved by all of their Fillmore neighbors and friends.
Throughout the novel, the Fillmore undergoes a series of unstoppable changes. When the city's municipal leadership changes, a man by the name of Mr. Belmont deems the neighborhood blighted, and slates many of the buildings for demolition (80). Over the course of the narrative, the community tries to save their neighborhood. Esther and Horace particularly encourage their friends not to sell to Belmont. Their efforts are ultimately to no avail...
