Summary
In “Vivian,” since “spending more time with Preacher,” Vivian had become more involved in her church (245). When she listened to Preacher talk, she “still got chills” (245). One day after a service, Preacher invited her over. Vivian declined, saying she had “to talk to Chloe” (247). Preacher confessed that their relationship was confusing him. He wanted to marry her, worried that his life was hypocritical. Vivian loved him, but did not want things to change.
At home, Chloe was sitting “at the table, dressed to go out” (248). Vivian had made plans to audition two other girls to sing alongside Chloe. Chloe told Vivian she wanted to perform a solo act. Vivian auditioned the girls anyway. Afterwards, she had feelings of doubt.
