Summary
In “Vivian,” Vivian arrived early for her meeting with Mr. Franklin “at the Champagne Supper Club” (64). While waiting, she thought about the establishment’s history and the girls’ future. Mr. Franklin explained that he had seen the Salvations perform recently and wanted to manage them. He particularly exclaimed about Ruth’s talent. Although his offer was everything Vivian wanted, his promise to take the girls around the country and world, made Vivian realize their future “would not include her” (75). Despite her sadness, Vivian accepted the deal.
On her walk home, Vivian announced the news to everyone she saw. She even told Freddy, “the neighborhood drunk” (79). Freddy congratulated her, but was upset over news he had “heard about the redevelopment” (80). The “City’s redevelopment agency released a report,” deeming the Fillmore “blighted” (80).
