Summary
In pages 66 - 127, the narrator remembers a night Rose became frantic about her sister Mai's husband, Carl would beat her to death. She rushed them to Mai's house, determined to kill Carl. The man inside has a gun and threatens Rose. Lan tells Rose to calm down; the man is not Carl. Mai had moved elsewhere years prior.
He remembers a night lying under a tree with another boy, Trevor, staying out long after Rose expected him home. The boys told each other secrets.
He thinks about Rose's taxing work at the nail salon, how much immigrants are made to depend on their bodies for labor and survival. One day at the salon he watched Rose give a pedicure to a woman with one leg, massaging the phantom missing leg. Later the narrator gave his mother a back massage. He parallels the movements...
