Summary
Tom, lying in bed, cannot sleep. He reflects on June and how the two of them met. June had started to fade in their last few years together, she got smaller, fainter, and less responsive. When Winnie and Joe were little, she stayed at home and raised them while Tom worked. During those years, she was happy and bright. They were good kids and she was a good mother.
Tom and June met when he was thirty. Tom and his friend Billy Drury popped into the Wimpy Cafe, a local coffee shop, after working on the murder of a young girl, and June was a waitress there.
