Summary
In the car, William complained about Lois. Still furious that she would not meet him, he wished "she never existed" (192). Lucy tried to understand his emotions.
Then Lucy thought about the past. She wondered if she had always known herself. She wondered what it was that she and William knew about each other. She wondered why they had married.
The atmosphere became "eerily quiet" (194). They were driving to the house where Catherine grew up. Lois had said that Catherine had come from nothing. Both Lucy and William were curious to see if this was true. When they approached the house, they were shocked. Lucy believed it "was much smaller" than the "very small house" where she had grown up (195). Watching William's face made Lucy "ache for him" (196). A few moments later, "he started the car and kept driving" (197).
