Summary
In Chapter 11, Jeanette is in Miami, 2006. She is working behind a beauty counter at a department store. Her relationship with Carmen is distant. Jeanette tells Carmen to leave Julio and says that she does not love her father. They meet on several occasions but Jeanette is unable to tell Carmen about the abuse. Mario, whom Jeanette met in rehab, is selling and taking drugs. Jeanette snorts Oxytocin for the first time and the high takes her back to a childhood memory of sheltering with her mother and father in their bathroom during a hurricane, during which she felt safe and looked after. Jeanette and Mario’s usage spirals into addiction as Jeanette tries to recreate that first high.
