Summary
The narrative in Chapter 6 is from the perspective of Carmen, Miami, 2016. Carmen’s preparations for Thanksgiving dinner are interrupted by a scream from one of her neighbor’s houses. Carmen finds blood on her neighbor’s driveway. Carmen reveals she cut ties with Jeanette until she could prove her sobriety and that this Thanksgiving will be their first together in several years. Carmen tries to play the perfect host, masking her contempt for her family and her anxiety about the next door house. Carmen confronts Mario, believing that he is using drugs, only to discover that he is taking prescription medication. Jeanette brings up her father, Julio. Carmen remembers attending his funeral where Jeanette told her that Julio had molested her. Carmen leaves the room to avoid having to continue the discussion with Jeanette.
