Summary
9 – Mitchell and Jane are the only refugees who join Hank on their midnight walk across the bridge to the Flatlands. As they walk for what turns out to be hours, Mitchell considers the risky nature of what he is doing, and how his choice to leave Randall’s Island is yet another example of his habit of running away from things – his family home, his jobs, the Zukorminiums, and now the Island. For a while he is accompanied by the imagined presence of Elsa, who makes him realize that they are more alike than he ever thought – they are both, she says, obsessed.
