Odd Thomas is a fry cook who happens to able to see dead people. These people do not talk to Odd, but often they have unfinished business with the living world for which they need his help. Sometimes it is a murder victim who wants her killer caught, as with Penny Kallisto. Penny is the victim of a sexual predator. Penny is her killer's first victim. Penny wants her killer caught before he can hurt anyone else. Penny comes to Odd and gives him psychic impressions of her killer and then indicates who her killer is when he comes driving past Odd's house. With this information, Odd is able to accuse the killer of his crime and encourage him to turn himself in. When the killer runs, Odd chases after him and traps him until the police can arrest him.
