Summary

Chapters 5 - 10 include the second half of Coop’s perspective and Part 1. Chapter 5, "If You Start Walking Around Decatur High, Talking and Laughing with Jupiter Sanchez Like You’re Her New Bestie, Everyone Notices," begins with Coop talking about Rae and how people are talking about her, and how curious everyone is. Coop feels jealous but also strange that Rae has not seemed to reach out to him. He confides in the reader how he feels like the “third musketeer” (48). Rae tries out for the cheerleading squad and impresses everyone, doing some incredible backflips. Coop starts to notice her freckles and lips. She does a few more cheerleading positions and holds with Golly that gain her a position on the team. Coop feels frustrated that Rae does not make a bigger deal of thanking him in front of everyone.
