Alonzo
Alonzo is the main character of "The Token Superhero." When Alonzo is born, he tests "positive for Kurtzberg-24 Syndrome, the genetic anomaly responsible for giving superpowers to people" (15). His parents hope that Alonzo will only acquire those superpowers that will allow him to lead "a normal life" (15). Alonzo's father is particularly worried about his son's condition, because he thinks that white people will persecute "a colored boy with superpowers" (15). As Alonzo grows up, his powers slowly develop. His parents are thrilled when the powers prove not to be debilitating.
When Alonzo is a teenager, he joins a group of teen superheroes called Teen Justice Force. The force is meant to create a bridge between the superhero youth and the superhero adults.
