Summary
In "Aftermath," Rene Reynolds had "spent years mapping the neural networks of the human brain" (215). Through her research, she developed "the Neuro-Enhancer," a device which created the "cure for Parkinson's disease" (215). At a conference, she gave a report on her research and technology. She was hopeful that the Enhancer would help bring "the country back together" (218).
Then one day, Rene was attacked and kidnapped. She woke up in a narrow trailer with "at least sixty" African Americans (219). She realized she had been captured by the Skinners, people harvesting human organs.
Leon traveled in search of Rene. He had heard of her work and knew he must save her. When he found the building where she was held, he realized that slavery had returned to America (222). He felt a tingling in his neck, turned, and saw Rene.
