Summary

In "Runway Blackout," a new class of supermodel, called the therianthropes, emerged after "people started to date more interracially" (167). The therianthropes had new “genetic traits,” which allowed them to shape shift (167). They could change into animals or imitations of one another. Predominantly, the therianthropes could choose the color of their skin. Their one common trait was that "they all had black ancestry" (168).

One of "the highest-paid" therianthrope models, Voile, decided that she and the therianthropes needed to make a change (168). During Fashion Week, they would stage a runway blackout. They would refuse to shape shift, appearing only in their true forms, as black individuals. On the night of the event, everyone was shocked by the blackout. Voile hoped that the blackout showed "everyone how vibrant, vital, and necessary therianthropes were in their natural form" (173).
