Summary

In Chapter 29, Obie and Charlie meet at the movies. While settling into their seats, Obie notices Clyde in the theater. Obie says nothing, but Charlie notices him tensing. Clyde approaches and starts intimidating Obie. He then outs him to Charlie, calling him derogatory names. He insults Charlie, too. When he leaves, Charlie suggests they talk outside.

Obie is convinced Charlie wants to end their relationship. However, Charlie is understanding. She admits she has “never met a transgender person before,” but wants to learn (256). Obie admits his identity will hurt her (257). Charlie is unconcerned, assuring him she likes him for who he is.

In Chapter 30, after submitting his essay for the contest, Obie texts Charlie. He wants her to read it, finally ready for her to know more about him.
