Summary
In Chapter 7, after the meeting, Obie has dinner with his paternal grandparents Halmoni and Harabuhji. Obie reflects on his family’s response to his transition. He used to attend church, but has not prayed since he announced he was transgender “at the end of fifth grade” (68). Although Obie worried Halmoni would take the news poorly, she was accepting. Obie had feared his grandparents’ disapproval because they were Catholic and Korean. To Halmoni, Dad was the perfect son. Marrying Mom, a white woman, had created challenges, but his grandparents now loved her.
In Chapter 8, Lucy texts saying she heard Obie “pissed [his] pants at school” (71). Obie realizes Clyde “told everyone before he got expelled” (71).
