NW

NW is a neighborhood in London. It is the neighborhood where Leah, Natalie and Nathan grew up. However, as the novel begins, the neighborhood is run-down, crime, and drug-ridden. Many of the residents, such as Michel, fear for their safety in the neighborhood and wish to leave. At one point, Natalie insists on moving back to NW for a time with Frank, but this does not last.

The Courtyard

The courtyard is the patch of grass and hammock in between the different apartment units where Leah and Michel live. Leah often goes down to the courtyard to sit in the hammock. She also smokes pot with Ned in the courtyard. It represents idleness and leisure, as well as Leah's own commitment to stagnancy and remaining where she is in life.
