Summary
This next part, “Host,” is written from Keisha/Natalie’s perspective and organized according to short, numbered vignettes. In “1. These red pigtails,” the narrative flashes back to a memory of Keisha Blake and Leah Hanwell playing in a pool as 4-year-old children. Keisha saves Leah from drowning. In “2. Kiwi fruit,” Keisha comes over to Leah’s house and is shocked to hear how Leah speaks to her mother, Pauline. In “3. Holes,” Keisha, Leah, and their friend from school Nathan Bogle, play with the elevator. Nathan asks Keisha and Leah how many holes they have. In “4. Uncertainty,” Keisha’s older sister, Cheryl, laughs at her when she asks about her holes.
