Summary
Felix gets on the train and he sits near two men wearing hoodies and earbuds. A seat becomes available near them. When a pregnant white woman boards the train, she tries to get one of the two men to move his feet so that she can sit down. When she is unsuccessful, Felix tries to help, but one of the guys picks a fight with Felix instead. Felix gives up his seat and leaves the car at Kilburn Station, feeling “a great wave of approval, smothering and unwanted, directed toward him, and just as surely, contempt and disgust enveloping the two men and separating them, from Felix, from the rest of the carriage, from humanity” (194).
As he is walking from the train, Felix sees three missed calls from Devon in prison. Felix thinks about how their mother, Jackie, came to visit a few...
