Chapters 34 through 38 Summary
In chapter thirty-four, Jem tells the police everything except the personal aspects of her relationship with Spider. They leave around lunch time, with a promise to return later with Spider. A woman enters the church and asks to speak to Jem. She is obviously ill and asks Jem for the date of her death. Jem refuses, but is soon accosted by an old man with only four weeks to live. Simon intercepts the man and offers to help him as Jem escapes to the inner reaches of the church.
In chapter thirty-five, Anne suggests that Jem's role may be to remind people to live their lives to the fullest because each moment moves them one moment closer to death, whether they know the date of that death or not. Jem is impressed by the fact that Anne is helping counsel people...
