Kate Nelson

Kate is the protagonist of the novel. She is a 57-year-old Black woman who has been married many times. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, she faces a spiritual crisis in which she is unsure about her future and her purpose.

Yolo Day

Yolo is Kate’s long-time lover. He is a painter and artist who is slightly younger than Kate. He has a very laid-back personality, but an underlying fear of time. He has doubts about the purpose of his life.

Avoa

Avoa is Kate’s friend and traveling companion on her trip down the Colorado River.

Sue

Sue is one of Kate’s traveling companions during her voyage on the Colorado River. Sue is an older woman, who says she is now celibate and focusing on her life outside of romantic relationships.
