Summary
In “Kate Awoke the Last Day,” Kate prepares to leave the rain forest and her companions behind. The night before, she had a dream in which an old woman filled her home with flowers. Kate wanted the woman to stay, but she had other appointments to attend to.
The group leaves their corner of the rain forest by boat. She tells Armando about her dream, and he is surprised to learn Kate is concerned with “old age” (166). Kate agrees, saying she did not realize her concern, either.
The group continues in the boat for several hours, all feeling a newfound closeness. Eventually, they arrive at the airport and exchange formal goodbyes.
