Summary
“Naturally” begins with Lalika telling Kate the specifics of her captivity. She and her friend, Gloria, were allowed to spend 15 minutes together in the prison yard each day. After some time, they decided their “only hope was to pray." Thus, the pair began praying to Saartjie Baartman, a woman they had learned about in an issue of Jet magazine (113). They learned Saartjie was a South African woman who had been kidnapped and sent to Europe, where people paid to witness her “physical deformities” (114).
Lalika explains that she and Gloria soon began to have powerful dreams about Saartjie.
