Summary
“He Wondered” opens with Yolo contemplating the house he and Kate share. He observes how differently they live. Kate is highly organized and keeps her possessions to a bare and necessary minimum. Yolo, on the other hand, finds it difficult to throw anything away and lives in clutter. In particular, Yolo collects and hoards different types of clocks and watches.
The story then reverts to Kate, who is still experiencing sickness brought on by her Colorado River journey. She thinks about her first husband and the child they had together. One Valentine’s Day, she had received the gift of a serving dish covered in colorful daisies. Kate struggled to hide her disappointment at the less than romantic gift.
